We're waste-full.

Yes, it's true but probably not what you're thinking!

Did you know that there is incredible value in waste? Discarded seeds, husks, skins and pips leftover from the food and drink industry are transformed into high performance ingredients which we use in our skincare and soaps, like our olive oil which is upcycled from the discarded olives that do not make the grade for food consumption, or our strawberry oil which is made from the seeds leftover from the production of jam. This awesome circular process is called UPCYCLING and it is a way of reusing waste to create something of a higher value and quality. By using these ingredients and avoiding the use of virgin products our environmental impact is lessened and this process also diverts waste from landfill which reduces our CO2 emissions. Its and win-win situation.

Upcycling is an important step towards a circular economy and we are huge believers in this process which is why we have decided to use upcycled oils in each one of our products.

This isn't a trend, it's the future of sustainable beauty.

Ingredient glossary.

We have several categories that our oils fall into. Here's a bit of information about them all...

Zero waste.

These are oils that are produced from plants that are grown purely to supply the oil. The remaining pulp after processing is utilised for animal feed or natural fertiliser so there is no waste from this process.

Upcycled.

These are oils that are produced as a by-product of another industry, for example the leftover pomace (stones, pips, seeds skins, rejected fruits etc) from the food and drink industry. The remaining pulp leftover from this process is also processed into animal feed or natural fertiliser so there is no waste from these oils.

Organic.

Organic grown oils are oils that come from plants that have been grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. They are certified by an authorized regulatory agent, such as the Soil Association, ECOCERT, or Nature et Progrès and are therefore better for the planet and people.

Cold pressed.

With cold pressed oil, the source material will only be extracted through heating to a certain temperature. In the UK that is 40°C / 104°F.
The lower temperature used during extraction means the natural compounds within the oil are preserved and retain as much of their natural integrity as possible.

Refined.

Refined oils are produced by pressing plant material under high temperature or by solvent extraction. Sometimes this process is necessary to remove the natural scent of oils which would make them unappealing to the consumer, or to remove impurities that would make them prone to oxidation. Whilst we choose organic/cold pressed over refined, some of our oils have gone through the refining process to create the most stable and pleasing products possible.

Nature identical.

Nature identical ingredients are chemically identical to natural ingredients, but are synthetically created in a lab.  Nature-identical ingredients have all the benefits of the natural ingredient but without the environmental consequences that some ingredients have. The molecular structure and physical/chemical properties of nature identical ingredients are identical to that of the natural ingredient.

Genetically modified.

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is one in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or combination. We do not use any ingredients that fall into this category.

Ecocert + Cosmos approved.

The certifications issued by Ecocert/COSMOS guarantee and highlight the best environmentally friendly and socially conscious practice.

Palm oil free.

Palm oil free means that none of the ingredients used in the manufacturing of the product contain palm oil or any its derivatives. For more information on palm oil read our blog entry here.

Fair trade.

Fairtrade changes the way trade works through better prices, decent working conditions and a fairer deal for farmers and workers in developing countries.
By choosing Fairtrade, people can create change through their everyday actions.
